Movie Review: Red 2
The first film offered something new to the audience – retired agents who were extremely dangerous and extremely capable at what they do. We also got to meet plenty of zany characters played by established actors like Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich and Brian Cox. And there was a sweet but funny love story woven in as well.
The sequel follows the same formula with more emphasis on the relationship part – between Frank Moses (Bruce Willis) and Sarah (Mary-Louise Parker). They are forced to sort out the kinks in their relationship while on a mission with some of his old friends. The mission that takes them to different locations around Europe and brings them face-to-face with danger constantly.
RED 2 skates on a very thin storyline (wafer-thin, really), but as long as you view the film in the same manner that Sarah absorbs all the things that are happening to her boyfriend, the film moves along just fine – even if it feels like Willis is just phoning in his performance in some scenes.
Thankfully, Malkovich, Mirren and Anthony Hopkins make the most of their characters, and – surprisingly – so does Korean star Byung-hun Lee. – Mumtaj Begum
